My friend and I are throwing a Halloween party for adults. We need some cheap and tasty food ideas that we can make work with a scary Halloween theme. We would like to serve something better to our guests than hot dogs.
Any suggestions or recipes that would be great as either a main course or an appetizer?

Halloween is always the best time of year for food and stuff and other than costumes, food is the next important thing. If you have ever looked at the newest Crate and Barrel magazine you will notice that they have cupcake pans shaped like 3-D pumpkins. These shapes are the perfect halloween party treat. Just get a bettycrocker mix, place them in the pan, and decorate with orange frosting. Easy as 1,2,3.

Hot dogs will be the cheapest. You could make “wormy dogs” by slicing the hot dogs long ways into long, thin strips and dropping the strips into boiling water. They will curl up. Serve them on a huge serving platter with some tongs. Mummy dogs: take a package of refrigerated breadstick dough, you would use one strip for each hot dog wrapping each dog to look like a mummy, bake till the bread stick dough is golden brown. Dot mustard for the eye balls.

Taco Tarts. In a large skillet, add 1 T. oil, add 1/2 cup chopped onion and cook till tender; then 1/2 pound ground turkey or beef and cook till done; Stir in 1 clove of minced garlic, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp dried oregano leaves and chili powder. Set aside. Take a package of refrigerated pie crusts and roll a crust on a floured surface. Using cookie cutters, cut out pairs of desired shapes. Put a shape on a prepared baking sheet (lined with parchment paper for easy clean up), Brush edges with egg white. Add 1 T of taco mixture or so onto each shape. Sprinke top with shredded cheese of your choice. Top with remainin shape. Press edges together to seam. Decorate/paint each shape with egg yolk paint. Bake 10-12 minutes on 375. For egg yolk paint, 1 egg yolk only, 1 tsp water. and food coloring to get to your desired color. You could make bats, ghosts, pumpkins, black cats, etc. Service these with some salsa.

Eye balls (roll ups). For filling, 1 pkg cream cheese softened; 1 clove minced garlic; small can of chopped black olives. Spread a flour tortilla with the cream cheese mixture and roll up. Slice each tortilla into several rounds. Stand on end, add a small dollop of sour cream, put a sliced black olive on the sour cream and a piece of chopped red pepper in the middle of the olive. Serve with salsa on the side.

Harvest sticks. If you are having dip and vegetables, you can slice the carrots (not baby carrots) into long thin strips, celery into long thin strips, zucchini into long strips, peppers into strips and bundle them up and tie with raffia to hold them in place. You could just make a few of these for decoration and then lay out the regular vegetables. For the dip, you could hollow out a small pumpkin and wash good and put the dip into the pumpkin.

Spider web dip. On a round platter, make your favorite type of dip and have the last layer be the salsa, guacamole or beans. With cream cheese, decorate the top of the dip to look like a spider web. Serve with tortilla chips.

Ghosts on a stick. Insert a wooden craft stick into the stem side of a pear. Dip into melted white almond bark. Remove excess almond bark. Let stand on bototon of a baking cup for 1 minute. Add mini chocolate chips for the eyes. Set on wax paper to fully dry. They’re really not scary, but caramel apples are always a hit.

Cheese cake. Favorite (baked) cheese cake recipe. Decorate top (once set) with cut out fudge toppings by making the fudge using a larger pan so that the fudge is about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes to decorate the top of the cake. I don’t let the fudge set up completely. The best type of cheese cake (festiveness) is one with a chocolate crust or ginersnap crust. You could even buy the cheese cake and decorate the top. I’ve never done it, but you could melt white or dark chocolate and use the melted chocolate to decorate the cheesecake you’ve purchased. Depending on your recipe, the purchased cheesecake is probably cheaper than what you could make at home.

If you will be using ice cubes, you could freeze a plastic spider ring in each cube then add to the drinks.

You should do a pizza like in a shape of a 3D hand with the pizza sauce coming out of it like blood and sauce cuts all over it and for appetisers you should do cookies with sour jelly worms coming out of it.

    Silver dollar rolls:
These sandwiches are great for all parties. They are hand size and caterers make them. They are called silver dollar sandwiches. You just buy the silver dollar rolls at your grocery store bakery area. They bake them. Spread real butter on them and add shaved ham, roast beef and turkey. Add cheese cut in triangles and lettuce if preferred. Have some mayo and mustard on ice on the side. Just piles these up and put some lettuce on and put some fake spiders in between crawling up the pile.

Here is a picture so you can get an idea:

Taco Dip. This is a great food that goes well at all parties and also a catered item.
    Taco Dip:
    2 softened cream cheese.
    1 16oz sour cream
    1 packet taco seasoning.

Mix with mixer. Put in bottom of a cookie sheet. Top with shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and green onions. Use the cheese but you can altered the rest to your taste, maybe add black olives. Make 2 of these. Serve with tostitos scoops.

Put the taco dip in 2 round tins from the store. After putting the cheese top layer decorate it to look like a cat’s face using olives, carrot strips for whiskers, a dorito for the nose. Cut 2 black triangles to tape to the outside of the pan for ears.

Fruit bowl: Make a fruit bowl with cut up fresh pineapples, sliced strawberries, green and red seedles grapes, sliced oranges. Put these in a bowl. Best to make the night before so all the juices run together, just stir before setting out. Put some gummy eyes around the edge to make it look spooky.
