Wheres the coolest place to be for Halloween in the United States?

I want to take a trip towards the end of October to some state that really knows how to celebrate Halloween. What I dont want is Halloween in Hawaii, or Halloween in Arizona. I want some place that captures the essence of autumn, pumpkin carving contests, street masquerades, themed food and drink, those fun houses where people jump out at you.

Some place where the leaves are beautiful and the culture is inviting, fun, and classically cool.

Got any ideas?

    Salem, Mass. Maybe they have a witch’s convention. Or Eerie, Indiana. Maybe Hell, Michigan is having devil of a time.
